*This is part one of an eight-part series looking at each NFL division.
The NFC East is the second weakest division in the NFL, narrowly beating out the bottom-dwelling AFC South. Even though they are mired in mediocrity, the teams are bunched rather tightly together for a compelling division race. Based on the Vegas over/under win totals, the following graph ranks the relative strength of each division in the NFL. The NFC East has a projected win percentage of only 44.8%.
The NFC East will play the AFC West and the NFC South in addition to each other. Those divisions project as the second and tied for fourth-most difficult divisions. The AFC West and South have expected win percentages of 55.15% and 52.94%, respectively.
Coming out of the oddest season ever in 2020 due to the pandemic, the NFL has instituted one significant change that will heavily impact win totals in 2021. They added a seventeenth game. Each team in the division will face three different opponents that correlate to their position in the 2020 final divisional standings. This change should not be underestimated in assessing win totals and division winners.
